René is often asked, “What is the most fun you ever had while antique hunting?” Without skipping a beat his response is “Shipshewana, Indiana”. Imagine quiet, rural Indiana, Amish country, with horse and buggies, cornfields as far as the eye can see, maybe a quilting bee on a Friday night. Now Imagine, same location, an auction barn crammed to the rafters with consignments from as many as thirty separate consigners, each with their own 10 ft by 10 ft stall, all to be auctioned off by as many as 10 individual auctioneers, simultaineously! Well, it’s a special kind of bedlam as the opening bell rings. Each auctioneer springs into action, working to sell his lots with his own distinct cadence and voice. Bids are flying, folks scramble to pick up their goods and the hall is filled with multiple layers of overlapping sound and excitement. You know, being smack dab in the middle of a country auction that was as frenzied as a bull run on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, well that’s my kind of fun.
